The Office of Parks Recreation and Historic Preservation (OPRHP) will hold a public meeting Thursday March 3rd at 7:00 pm at the Kings Park High School. The purpose of this meeting will be to invite public participation in the planning process of the Governor Alfred E. Smith Sunken Meadow State Park in Kings Park. The OPRHP will provide an overview of the park and the master plan process followed by a period of time to receive public input about the park.
Anyone who cannot attend the meeting can mail written comments to Mark Hohengasser, Park Planning, Agency Building 1, 17th floor, Empire State Plaza, Albany, NY 12238. The deadline to submit written comments is April 4th 2011. the OPRHP plans to prepare a draft of the master plan and environmental impact statement by September 2011 and hold a public hearing in October 2011. The final plan is expected to be completed by January 2012 and to adopt the findings of the plan and impact statement by February 2012.
According to the information packet Sunken Meadow State Park is one of the Long Islands premiere state parks. The Park has almost three miles of sandy beach, a boardwalk, Pavilions with bath houses and changing area, three nine hole golf courses, a driving range, sports fields, trails and picnic areas.
More than 2.5 Million people visit the park every year and the public golf courses are the most played in the country.
In the mid 1990s the state replace the boardwalk, however the OPRHP reports the the aging infrastructure is deteriorating from heavy use and are in need of repairs and upgrading to meet public demand.
